This stunning city within a city is a must visit in Valencia. This huge complex offers a multitude of activities, photo opportunities and excitement for the whole family.

You can walk round several of the buildings free of charge or visit the many museums and exhibits for a fee.

The designer Santiago Calatrava expressed his happiness that Valencia had symbolised the new century with his designs.

The Hemesferic

The Hemesferic was the first building to be finished in 1998. The building resembles a huge eyeball floating on a pool of water. The eye even blinks with the aid of a steel and glass shutter operated by hydraulic lifts. You can take in a show at the Hemesferic's planetarium or Imax theatre. In the Imax theatre you sit almost laid back in comfy chairs and watch the 3D film screened on the dome above you. We watched a film about dinosaurs which was 45 minutes long and very interesting. You are given a headset with audio. For English, press the green button three times. You need to arrive 15 minutes before the film starts. There's a gift shop, toilets and cafe inside the theatre.

The centerpiece of the whole complex is the amazing science museum which opened alongside the Hemesferic in 2000. The museum prides itself on the 'hands on' approach to science. You are actually encouraged to touch everything. We enjoyed the museum and played with everything. We were disappointed that several of the displays weren't working - the kids that morning had destroyed them. The museum is on three floors and takes a good few hours to get round. Great fun - regardless of your age.

The Oceanographic

Next door to the science museum you'll find the 'Oceanografic', Europe's largest marine park and home to more than 500 species of fish and other sea creatures from every ocean of the world. The touch pool is always a favorite with the children. You could easily spend an entire day in the oceanarium which boasts everything from white whales and walruses to dolphin displays. The Oceanografic was designed by Spanish architect Felix Candela.

Idealspain's impressions

When it comes to the architecture, most of it is beyond words and has to be seen close-up to be appreciated. The sheer size of the complex is out of this world. There's so many areas where you can walk, free of charge and unhindered. Every corner offers something different. The architecture and walkways are interspersed with pieces of modern art, vibrant colours and revolutionary designs.

The City of Sciences is impossible to see in one day so planning in advance is advisable.
