Torrevieja is to be found on the coast of Spain, known as the Costa Blanca, between Alicante in the north and Cartagena in the south. Torrevieja is surrounded by natural salt lagoons that form the 'Salterns of Torrevieja'. They are considered to be the largest in Europe.

Torrevieja has been increasing in size since the 1800's and has now reached huge proportions. its expansion continues in every direction with hundreds of thousands of new properties springing up each year. There are very few nations not represented by residents here. The area has a huge community of English and German residents. Torrevieja is close to becoming a city.

Getting aound Torrevieja

Torrevieja is just 50km from Alicante airport and this is where most visitors fly into.

One of the nicest ways to see Torrevieja is by horse drawn carriage. These depart from Paseo de la Libertad near the tourist office. Tours last around 20 minutes but you can arrange with the driver to take your own customised route. There's also a tourist train in Torrevieja that runs from Paseo de la Libertad to the Torre del Moro viewpoint. You can hop on and off the train along the route. At around €3 per person, it's a great way to see much of Torrevieja. The trains run every 40 minutes.

idealspain visits Torrevieja

We visited Torrevieja in November 2001. We found the town to be nothing like we expected it to be and were bitterly disappointed. Although the sea-front area was well kept and very attractive, the town in the background can only be described as disorganised chaos. The street system was badly managed and impossible to navigate by car. We found ourselves constantly disorientated. The residential areas comprise of several huge urbanisations, all of which appeared to have spread in every direction with very little attention being paid to organisation. New building work seems to be adding to the confusion. However, in general this is another good holiday resort that offers beaches, sunshine and sangria.

Idealspain went back to Torrevieja in February 2011. We instantly noticed that Torrevieja had improved dramatically. Old roads have been renewed and many areas have been tidied up. A lot of the dirty bars have gone and been replaced with clean and modern businesses. Torrevieja sea front is superb and the whole resort is perfect for family holidays.
