Gata de Gorgos is located in the north of the Costa Blanca, on the eastern coast of Spain. Just off the AP7 highway, Gata de Gorgos is just a short drive from Javea and Denia to the north and Calpe, Altea and Benidorm to the south.

Within the region of Valencia, Gata de Gorgos is a small, historical town that was occupied by the Moors during the Arab Conquest in the 8th-13th centuries). In around 1220 the town was re-conquered by Jaime I of Aragon. Originally part of Denia, Gata de Gorgos obtained its independence in 1535.

Gata de Gorgos obtained its name from the Gorgos River (also known as the Jalon River), which runs through the town.

Gata de Gorgos

As you drive through Gata de Gorgos you will see evidence of what the town is most famous for; articles made from the local esparto grass. These popular items include baskets of all sizes and shapes. There are over 50 shops in the town selling such wares and it makes for an excellent photograph. The area is also dependent on agriculture, especially the production of moscatel grapes that are used to produce raisins.
