Just 19km from Malaga within Andalucia, lies the principality of Benalmadena which consists of three main areas. Benalmadena Pueblo (village) is located on the mountain side, an old, typical Andalucian village with steep, narrow streets and white-painted houses that retain a wealth of culture. The village has more than its share of attractions including museums, a castle, sports centre and a wide and varied selection of shops, bars and restaurants.

Arroyo de la Miel is a populated area between the mountains and the coast.

This is where most of the area's population and businesses are located and it too has a wide range of attractions including a sports complex, bilingual library and the world famous theme park Tivoli World. This is also where the cable car to the mountain peak starts from.

The third area is the most visited by tourists, Benalmadena Costa which sits next to Torremolinos. It has 9km of shoreline with beautiful beaches and tiny coves and a fully equipped marina for over 1,000 vessels. The marina is surrounded by apartments and offers sports such as diving and sailing. The marina boasts many international awards for design and functionality.

Benalmadena Costa also has its own casino, night club and golf course. There is a garden of over 200,000 square metres, overlooking the sea. The La Paloma Park (pictured left), has a large lake, stocked with various water birds.

Next to the park is the feria ground where the flea market is held. In Benalmadena there is a booming hotel industry to which hundreds of thousands of tourists flock each year. Much of the trade is through package holiday companies. There are also thousands of apartments for rent.

Local festivities include:

  • Easter Week, live presentation of the Passion of Christ in the Pueblo

  • February 28th - Andalucia Day (everything Spanish closed)

  • 24th-29th June. Arroyo de la Miel celebrates John the Baptist with a local fair

  • Mid-August, Virgin of the Cross festivities with a fair in the Pueblo

  • July 16th, evening boat procession on the Costa for Veladilla del Carmen

Benalmadena's paseo maritimo is lined with small shops and bars and fronts a long, wide beach that is kept clean and has lifeguard service. Benalmadena is certainly an attraction for tourists, most of which come on package deals as is reflected in the number of high-rise hotels that line the seafront.

The N340 highway runs alongside Benalmadena Costa and turns into the N340a which runs through the centre and can become very congested at times. One of the most popular attractions in the marina is the Sea Life Centre. See our report and photographs. You may also wish to visit the theme park, Tivoli World.

Pictured right and below is the totally unique Castillo de Colomares, the lookout castle of Benalmadena Pueblo. It is an example of the architecture of five continents and consists of intricate architecture, magical shapes and complex turrets. It is somewhat a bit of a folly but interesting all the same. There is a very small admission charge. There is also a falconry centre next door worthy of a visit.

At night the award winning Benalmadena port is illuminated in spectacular style. Crystal clear waters are filled with huge fish that bubble to the surface if you feed them. The port is also home to many international events such as fishing tournaments and regattas.

When it comes to restaurants and bars, Benalmadena has a huge variety, offering international and local cuisine. The selection of hotels is also of the highest standard.

The local countryside around Benalmadena offers excellent hill-walking, mountain biking and horse riding. There are many pathways that make it easy and there are companies that offer a guided walk service.

Close to Benalmadena there are several other important tourist resorts such as Fuengirola, Torremolinos and Mijas.
