The
state-run
RENFE
provide
a
good
service
with
fares
that
are
among
the
cheapest
in
Europe.
Democracy
has
made
trains
run
on
time
but
RENFE
still
has
a
way
to
go.
This
is
mainly
due
to
the
fact
that
the
train
system
is
a
complex
one.
There
are
many
varieties
of
train
including
the
ferrobus
which
stop
at
almost
every
station.
For
long
journeys,
the
TALGO
is
a
good
option.
Fast,
comfortable
and
efficient.
TALGO
and
Inter-city
trains
have
buffet
and
bar
services
onboard.
Train
tickets
can
be
purchased
in
advance
from
main
stations,
ticket
agents
and
authorised
travel
agents.

Metro
In some of the major cities, an underground Metro system operates with great success and avoids the traffic congestion above ground. At peak times they can become overcrowded and uncomfortable. There is no smoking allowed on board. |

Car
hire
Car
hire
companies
are
plentiful
in
Spain,
particularly
around
coastal
areas.
They
can
become
heavily
booked
in
the
holiday
periods.
Competition
is
fierce
and
price
cutting
out
of
season
is
commonplace.
Unlimited
public
liability
insurance
is
included
in
the
price.
To
hire
a
car
you
wll
need
your
passport
and
a
full
driving
licence.
Most
European
driving
licences
are
now
accepted
in
Spain.
Many
companies
have
a
minimum
age
of
21
or
25
to
hire
a
car.
Make
sure
you
use
a
reputable
company
and
make
sure
you
read
the
small
print
on
your
hire
agreement.
Petrol
is
not
usually
included
nor
any
fines
you
incur.
Make
sure
there
is
no
restriction
on
mileage.
Many
companies
offer
an
airport
service
where
your
car
is
waiting
for
you
on
your
arrival
and
when
you
have
finished
with
it
you
simply
return
it
to
the
airport.

Buses
There
are
many
bus
companies
throughout
Spain
that
offer
good
service.
Generally
public
buses
are
of
a
high
standard,
well
maintained
and
cheap.
Smoking
is
not
allowed
on
any
public
transport
in
Spain.
Most
towns
have
a
bus
terminal
estacion
de
autobus.
When
waiting
at
a
bus
stop,
don't
take
it
for
granted
that
the
bus
will
stop
for
you.
Flamboyant
signals
and
throwing
yourself
in
its
path
are
the
only
ways
to
ensure
it
stops
for
you.
Many
of
the
city
buses
only
accept
the
correct
change.
Bear
in
mind
that
on
Sundays
and
public
holidays,
schedules
are
drastically
reduced.
You
are
best
to
avoid
travelling
on
these
days. |

Taxis
Only
use
taxis
that
display
a
special
licence.
Taxis
are
of
a
very
high
standard
and
are
governed
by
strict
legislation.
Taxis
display
a
green
light
when
free
(libre).
You
can
flag
a
taxi
down
in
the
street
or
look
for
a
taxi
rank.
Most
taxis
are
metered
but
they
will
have
set
prices
for
certain
journeys.
The
price
structures
are
set
by
the
local
government.
Tipping
of
5-10%
is
customary.
Smoking
is
not
allowed
in
taxis.
Ask
about
surcharges
for
airport
trips
and
baggage
handling.
WARNING
We
have
received
many
reports
(and
have
experienced
it
for
ourselves),
that
some
taxi
drivers,
especially
at
the
airports
(Malaga
in
particular),
will
try
to
rip
off
tourists
by
over
charging
them.
Before
you
get
into
a
taxi
for
a
long
journey,
ask
for
an
estimate
or
fixed
price.
If
in
any
doubt,
ask
the
driver
to
write
it
down.
This
avoids
any
argument
when
he
bills
you.
In
the
event
of
a
dispute
tell
the
taxi
driver
that
you
are
going
to
call
the
police.
This
will
be
enough
to
resolve
the
situation. |
