The ancient kingdom of Leon which was eventually annexed to Castile embraced three cities, Salamanca, Zamora and the provincial capital of Leon. Today the region is known for its many castles and monuments. The region is located in north central Iberia and is the largest region of Spain. Spain owes much to Leon and Castile for forging the regions into a unified Spain. Old Castile once held power that has long since shifted to Madrid. The region holds many surprises and offers excellent, unspoilt countryside and natural parks.

Ciudad
Rodrigo,
a
walled
town
dating
from
Roman
times.
The
area
is
known
for
its
16th
and
17th
century
town
houses,
built
by
the
conquistadors,
founded
in
the
12th
century
and
designated
a
national
monument.
You
can
wander
through
the
streets
admiring
the
many
churches
and
mansions.
The
major
attraction
of
the
city
being
the
Cathedral,
Santa
Maria.

called
Plaza
Mayor
and
is
a
showpiece
of
17th
century
architecture.

here,
by
foot,
explore
the
streets
and
rows
of
shops.
Pick

tourist
office

Plaza
Amayuelas.
It
is
easy
to
get
here
from Salamanca by
bus,
the
trip
taking
about
an
hour
and
costing
les
than
5€.
There
are

and
