Driving in Spain - Camper vans, motorhomes and caravans in Spain - Read about camping in Spain here

There's no finer way to see Spain than to drive at your leisure, especially if you have your accommodation behind you. Caravans and motorhomes are very popular in Spain, all year round. It's a popular way to travel for Spanish as well as Europeans. However, especially for first-timers, driving your precious motor-home through Spain can be daunting. We have tried here to collect as much useful information as possible to make it easier and safer for our readers.

When to visit Spain in a motorhome

Winter is the most popular time to visit Spain as the winters are so mild compared to the UK. The roads are also quieter. The downside however is that many campsites are busier and more expensive.

Where to stay in Spain with your motorhome

Whilst you can stay at a registered campsite in Spain, it is not essential. There is a growing network of places, official and unofficial where it is possible (and safe) to park overnight. Many of these stops have facilities for waste and fresh water. Some of these places are right on the beach and often very popular with caravans and motorhomes.

Camp sites and motor home parks in Spain are generally of a very high standard and have all the facilities you need. Most speak English and most can be booked online or by phone before arrival.

Security whilst camping in Spain

Security on official campsites is generally very good, especially when busy. However, don't take uneccessary risks. Never leave your camper unlocked, not even for a moment. If you have an alarm fitted, use it. Lock your doors at night and secure any valuables such as cycles, using padlocks.

Electricity and water whilst travelling in Spain

The electricity supply in Spain is 240v, the same as the UK although the voltage often drops to around 220v. All appliances will still work but appliances with heating elements such as kettles and heaters can take longer to heat up.

The water in most parts of Spain is drinkable. It's still often better though to boil the water first or use bottled water. Water that is not drinkable is labelled 'no potable'. Water in the cities and on the coast is better than in rural areas.

Many campsites now have free wi-fi internet.

LPG Re-fills in Spain

Up until a few years ago, refuelling a fixed LPG tank was difficult in Spain. However, the situation has changed somewhat and there is now a growing network of garages that provide LPG refills. Many garages also have a variety of adaptors to allow the filling of European tanks with different fittings. Here is a useful list of some of the garages.
