Velez Malaga, known locally simply as Velez is located just 1km inland from Torre del Mar and 26km from Malaga city. It is the capital of the district of Axarquia and although it has a population of over 70,000 it has yet to be developed on the scale of other southern regions of Spain. Oten described as a city and often as a town.

The town of Velez Malaga sprawls across the valley of the River Velez which feeds the huge acricultural industry here. The area is well known for vines, vegetables, olives and salads.

 
Velez Malaga is an ancient town with a great number of architectural monuments.Its history pre-dates Roman times. The skyline is dominated by the Castle. Fortaleza, built in the 13th century stands high on a hill in the oldest part of town. The 16 metre high tower, built to guard the city is still in a good state of repair. Spectacular views can be had from here.

Within the town you will find numerous convents, monasteries. The Santa Clara Convent has recently been moved. The old convent is to be converted into a Parador. There are also several major churches worthy of a visit.

The centre of town is Plaza de Las Carmelitas here you will find not only the Ayuntamiento or Town Hall but also the Convento de Jesus, Maria y Jose often referred to as Convento de Las Carmelitas. The convent was founded in 1669 and of particular interest are the 18th paintings housed there.
