Places in Spain - Avila

Avila is located 110km northwest of Madrid and 67km southwest of Segovia. The ancient city is surrounded by well preserved 11th century walls which are amongst the most important in Europe. The city has been declared a national landmark and also offers several important churches, palaces and a fortified cathedral.

You will find the tourist office near the cathedral. Here you can collect a city map. The walls average 33 feet in height and are built on Roman foundations. They have 88 semicircular towers and two gateways. They stretch over 2km.

The cathedral was built in 1099 and combines many influences in its design. It is described as a cold, austere cathedral and fortress. It is without doubt worthy of a visit as is the museum within.

There are also several Basilicas and Convents worthy of a visit in Ávila. A great way to get around and see the sights is the tourist train, pictured left. It costs around 3 euros. You will find ample accommodation within the city or try one of the rural hotels and houses in the area.

You will also find a good selection of quality shops in Avila. The streets are pleasant and safe to walk. You will find quality restaurants and a good selection of Tapas bars. The food in this area is wonderful.
