Places in Spain - Selwo Safari Park, Costa del Sol

Just off the N340 highway, close to Estepona lies one of the world's most unique nature parks, by the name of Selwo. The park is based on the African safari park idea and houses 2000 animals in semi-wild conditions. So far to date the park has been funded by 5.000 million pesetas.

We were kindly invited by the staff at Selwo to visit the park and report on the facilities and conditions there.

The park is easy to get to, with ample parking outside the front gate. The staff are very helpful and friendly. There are ample places to eat and drink and although some of the park is by all-terrain vehicle, be prepared for a good long walk.

Your journey through Selwo starts with the botanical gardens where you will see a wide variety of plants. all set in peaceful gardens. There are many animals on display, some of which are quite rare. All are kept in first class conditions and well cared for. One of the most unusual walks is through the bird canyon, a large netted area where birds fly freely, as though in the wild.

Cross the spectacular 107m long bridge to the central village where you can take the safari truck on two very different routes. The valley route encompasses the bears, lions and tigers among other animals. From the viewpoint, the whole park is visible and on a clear day you can see Gibraltar and the coast of Africa. The second route is the Sabana route which is inhabited by species such as gnus, orix, antelopes and rhinos. From here you can see the roaming elephants.

In all, Selwo provides a unique and fantastic experience for the whole family. It is not a zoo ! The animals are genuinely in almost natural habitats with sympathetic borders between them and the public.

One advantage that Selwo has is space - and plenty of it.

Owners of the park, Parques Reunidos have, as with all their parks, put a great deal of thought into the design and layout, making it a value for money attraction. We would recommend it to anyone.
