Places in Spain - Setinel (Setinel de las Bodegas), Andalucia

The proper name for Setinel is Setinel de las Bodegas. This tiny town is located north of Ronda, within Andalucia and in the province of Cadiz.

One of the main attractions of the town are the cave houses. The town is divided by a beautiful stream that flows under many bridges. The town is hardly affected by tourism although several tourist shops have sprung up to cater for day visitors. The town has a ruined fortress that stands on top of a hill, alongside the church.

Calle Jaboneria is a street worthy of a visit. It is believed to have been given its name due to the location of a soap factory in the street in the 18th century or maybe because the women used to come to the stream in this street to wash their clothes. From this street is a splendid view of La Peña (the walled crag), as well as the fortress and the church. The cave houses within this street and those in Calle Herreria are still inhabited and have been since prehistoric times. Many of the interiors of the caves are still blackened with soot. Some of the cave houses have been converted to tourist shops, selling all manner of local artisan wares. Good buys include local wine, olive oil, honey and jams. Brightly painted ceramics are also worthy of a mention.

The best views of the town can be had from the road heading out. The tiny houses are typical of Andalucian design, whitewashed to reflect the heat and having small windows to keep out the sun.

From Setenil, take a short drive to Olvira.
