Altafulla is a little resort close to Tarragona on the coast of Spain. Idealspain literally stumbled across this beautiful place in November 2010. Altafulla is just 10km from Tarragona and 90km from Barcelona on the Costa Dorada.. Access is easy via the AP7 motorway (exit 32).

 Altafulla

Your first point of call in Altafulla should be the tourist office. It is conveniently located on the main road into the town, next to the post office and local police station, (Calle del Marques). The young lady in the tourist office speaks perfect English and is happy to help.

Altafulla

Altafulla is a coastal resort and as such is busy in the summer. The beach is absolutely stunning. It's long and straight and is still lined with tiny fishermen's houses. There is little sign of mass tourism and nothing there to spoil the views.

Wandering the streets of the old town is what's best in Altafulla. The tiny, narrow streets go off in all directions and every one is different. Many of the buildings are painted pastel shades that blend with the red rock.

In the back streets you will find quaint hotels and guesthouses, alongside traditional shops. Many of the streets are inaccesible to traffic which makes them even more pleasant.

You will find that Altafulla is split into two parts; the railway line cuts through the town. The oldest part of town is away from the beach.

What to see in Altafulla
Altafulla
The main church in Altafulla stands at the top of the old town, next to the castle. The church is dedicated to Sant Marti and is located in Plaza de L'Iglesia.

The castle in Altafulla (below), dates from 1746 and is located in the heart of the old town. It is a great symbol of Medieval Altafulla and illustrates how important the town was as a strategic defence.

Close to the beach is a Roman Villa of great interest. The Roman Villa of Els Munts is one of the largest Roman villa complexes in the area and had connections to nearby Tarragona. It includes several complete rooms. Roman baths, industrial areas amd some fine mosaics. The villa is open from 10am to 1.30pm and 4pm to 7.30pm in the summer, with an earlier closing time of 5.30pm in the winter (October-May). Sundays and public holidays, open times are 10am-2pm. The site was declared a UNESCO world heritage site in the year 2000.

Fiestas in Altafulla

In April you will find the Cooking Pot Festival and in June, the Night of Witches. August sees the Artisan and Craft Fair and September, the Sant Antoni Painting Festival. November is the most important month with the Patron Saint, Sant Marti being celebrated.

Our visit to Altafulla

Idealspain visited Altafulla in November 2010 as part of our Costa Dorada tour. We were short of time so didn't get the best from the visit. We did however stroll through the old town and along the beach front. Altafulla is one of the nicest and quietest towns we have seen for a long time. The town is spotlessly clean, has a fabulous tourist office and is packed with history. We hope to visit again next year when we will stay overnight and visit in more depth. Altafulla is a great sidestep from the Tarragona main road, well worth a visit.
