Places in Spain - Castrolpol in Asturias

Castrolpol is a village in western Asturias. Described by the local authorities as a 'natural paradise', they are accurate with their description. Because of its location, the area combines a wonderful landscape, combined with tiny beaches, coves, valleys and rivers.

The mouth of the Eo River forms a natural boundary with the region of Galicia. The river is almost 10km long and averages 800m in width. It has been designated a protected area due to the wildlife present.

The village is situated on a small hill and consists of white houses with slate roofs. The church dominates the village skyline. The village still boasts original cobbled streets. The area still houses some ancient secrets in the form of at least 9 'castros', (hill forts). Some of them still to be excavated. Castrolpol was once the chief town in the area and the council commanded a fifth of the region of Asturias. In 1587, on the night of 28th October, a massive fire swept through the village and destroyed the village and all its art treasures.

The local economy is predominantly based around agriculture and cattle raising although the tourism industry is beginning to take hold. A visit to Castrolpol will reward you with many fine buildings including churches, palaces and several splendid gardens. The river offers a multitude of water sports and the Asturian boat race championships are held here each year.
