Places in Spain - Lugo

Lugo is a province named after its capital city, located in the region of Galicia, on the Bay of Biscay. It lies between LaCoruña and Asturias. Lugo is steeped in history and has a wealth of myths and legends and is dotted with ancient burial grounds. The area has many medieval villages and large Christian churches and monasteries, or at least the remains of them.

There are railway links with Madrid and Leon, Ourense, Vigo and LaCoruña as well as express links with major cities. There is also a wide selection of buses as the major roads pass through on their way to the north and west coasts.

Lugo has a been a provincial capital since Roman times and as a result has attracted unwanted attention from both the Vikings and the Moors, both of them having set the area on fire. The city was also visited by pilgrims on their route to Santiago de Compostela which is 66 miles away. The area has now settled down into a good agricultural business area. Today it is both peaceful and prosperous with quiet suburbs, attractive shopping streets and an ancient quarter, totally encircled by some of the most attractive defence walls in the whole of Spain. They were originally built by the Romans but have been extended over the years and now stand 9 metres high and are reinforced by more than 80 towers and four gateways.

There is a modern roadway around the wall which is worth driving round before joining the queues of cars waiting to pass through the gates. The first place to head for has to be the cathedral in the Plaza de Santa Maria. It started life in the 12th century but has been remodelled over the years. Lugo has a museum worth visiting where a wide selection of Roman and Celtic exhibits greet the visitor, along with a selection of articles used by the local country folk.

Apart from the countryside, the southern part of the province offers very little to the tourist, however Lugo is definitely a place to make a short stop.
