| The
Casa de Colon (Columbus's House) is situated in
the old quarter of Vegueta and is a fine example of
Colonial architecture. It houses a valuable collection
of objects and documents dating from the 15th century
as well as an impressive model of Columbus's route to
the Americas. The museum offers an excellent and educational
visit.
The
Canarian Museum is also located in the same old
quarter and is based on the people who have inhabited
the island over the centuries. Here you can see the
customs and religions traditional to the island before
the Spanish arrived. There are also mummies on display,
prepared using the same method as the Egyptians used.
The library also contains more than 50,000 books and
newspapers.
The
Museum of Perez Galdos contains
the writer's complete works as well as important letters
and manuscripts.
The
Nector Museum is located
inside the cathedral and contains the island's best
treasures including important art from the 15th-18th
centuries. The cathedral itself took 73 years to build
and is still incomplete in parts. Tourists come here
on Thursdays and Sundays to see exhibitions of Canarian
dance and music.
